Diesel Fumes

A research about exhaust emissions from the latest diesel-powered vehicles has been carried out by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders

The motor industry in Britain is all set to fight-back the demonisation campaign against diesel engines according to which the air quality in UK is deteriorating with diesel fumes. Some of the biggest auto manufacturers like BMW, Ford, Jaguar Land Rover and Volkswagen are running this campaign as local authorities have raised the surcharges on diesel powered vehicles. So much so, the authorities are working with all their zest to introduce an ultra-low emission zone in central London.

Owners of diesel vehicles are panicked big time as the Paris Mayor has called for a ban on all diesel-powered vehicles in the city by 2020. The British car industry, on the other hand, denies it completely that diesel is harming the globe. To prove its point it has given the example of CO2 emissions which are lower than that of petrol’s and it is also efficient than petrol. The newer technology of diesel engines is more eco-friendly and emits lesser carbon.

The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders chief executive Mike Hawes said that diesel engines of these days are the cleanest ever before and to improve the air quality, billions of pounds have been invested by the manufacturers. It would not be wise to put a ban on all diesel vehicles or to increase parking tax, it would not do any good to the environment.

The society has also shared an analysis report which shows how latest diesel engines meet the requirements of Euro 6 standards and produce only 0.005 gram of PM10 per kilometre drive. You can take this value as a single grain of sand produced per kilometre, which is way down than the engine produced in 2001.

You’ll need 42 million cars powered by latest diesel engines to produce the same amount of nitrogen oxide which is produced by a single coal-fired power station. Having said that, power stations are the reason why the world is facing climate issues. This much amount of deadly nitrogen oxide production should be taken care of immediately.

Ford UK chairman, Mark Ovenden said that they respect their customers choice and support them in all the scenarios regarding air quality and CO2 emissions.
