BMW has unveiled that M3 and M4 will eventually run on 4-cylinder engines in near future

BMW M3 was introduced as a saloon version only with turbocharged 6-cylinder engines. It is almost 26 years when BMW started using high revving naturally aspirated engines for its M-division, but now they are thinking about downsizing.

BMW’s M division is changing the engine’s original induction method, known as ‘M TwinPower Turbo’. It shuns the twin-scroll rule of BMW’s standard engines for an arrangement that uses low-inertia turbo operating at maximum 1.3bar of boost up and is equipped with a ground-breaking water-to-air intercooler system. It is fitted on the top of the engine, but now the BMW engine division management has whispered that they are trying to downsize the M division engines with new 4-cylinder engines.

Head of product development at BMW M-division said that the M3 and M4 could ultimately be equipped with four cylinder engines in the near future and they don’t want to start this development with the power output in mind but definitely you could see the future M3 and M4 models powered by a 4-cylinder engine.

He further added that this engine replacement will help the M-division to reduce the weight of their cars. He believes that if they have a car with reduced weight then it is obviously easy to meet the performance targets through a 4-cylinder engine.

Let’s see what happens to the M-Division but just to remind you that the current BMW M-Series is powered by 3.0 Litre twin turbo engines with six pots. These six cylinder engines are efficient and powerful with rated power of 431 horses and torque of 490 Lb-Ft. With these engines the car can sprint from zero to 62 in just 4.1 seconds, but can a 4-cylinder engine do this? Just wait and see
