A specific wavelengths lights is absorbed by alcohol, thus measuring the intensity of this light can pinpoint driver\u2019s blood alcohol level very precisely.<\/p>\n<p>The breath-based system on the other hand, will be measuring alcohol molecules in the breath of the driver.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Is_it_a_collaborative_program\"><\/span>Is it a collaborative program?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Yes! It is a collaborative research partnership between National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.newswise.com\/institutions\/view\/7233\" target=\"_blank\">Automotive Coalition for Traffic Safety (ACTS)<\/a><\/strong> \u2013 representing 17 auto makers \u2013 to come up with some kind of technology which will detect alcohol in blood and if the level is high, prevent the vehicles from being driven.<\/p>\n<p>This program was initiated back in 2008 and now we have seen some interesting results.<\/p>\n<h2><\/h2>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"When_will_this_technology_be_available\"><\/span>When will this technology be available?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>There has been an event in which a test vehicle has been in use to determine the efficacy of the system. A great deal of work still needs to be done, but the authorities have achieved a great deal of development milestones.
